Praying Bigger

I don’t know about y’all, but sometimes it is easy for me to pray small prayers for my small children. We prepare them for bed and I ask the Lord to help them sleep through the night. I pray for temper tantrums to subside and behaviors to be corrected. Sometimes I pray myopically, not looking much into the future, so preoccupied with the everyday.

However, God’s Word is such an encouragement to help me to remember to pray for the little things like the bonk on the forehead or the defiant attitude, but also for the much bigger things, as well. Paul’s letter to the Colossian church includes a wonderful example of praying bigger. He wrote to a church he had never met, but whose faith gave Paul great encouragement. In the opening verses of this epistle, the apostle wrote:

For this reason we also, since the day we heard about it, have not ceased praying for you and asking that you may be filled with the knowledge of His will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding, so that you will walk in a manner worthy of the Lord, to please Him in all respects, bearing fruit in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God; strengthened with all power, according to His glorious might, for the attaining of all perseverance and patience; joyously giving thanks to the Father, who has qualified us to share in the inheritance of the saints in light.

Do you pray for the future of your child? The Apostle Paul’s prayer reminds me of the importance of praying for my children’s spiritual welfare as more important than their physical well-being. Is this a priority in your prayer life?

Do you ask the Lord to help your children to please Him in all respects? To bear fruit in every good work and to increase in the knowledge of God?

Join me, mamas, and pray bigger! God’s Word is full of wonderful reminders to look past the everyday and pray for the little ones in our care to live in a way that pleases the Lord.
